For just the third time in Carroll County high school basketball history, the county will send both a boys and girls basketball team into the semifinals of the Maryland state basketball tournament.
The North Carroll boys and Liberty girls won Class 2A West Region championships last weekend, matching the accomplishments of the 2008 Winters Mill Falcons and the 1983-84 exploits of the South Carroll boys and Westminster girls teams.
North Carroll rolled over visiting Walkersville, 68-52, on Saturday to win its first trip to College Park since the 1984-85 season. The Panthers, who lost in the semifinals in both of their previous state tournament visits, will take a 19-5 record into Friday’s 7 p.m. game against traditional state power Gwynn Park (18-3) of Prince George’s County at the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center.
The Yellow Jackets beat Henry A. Wise to win the Class 2A South Region title and earn their 20th trip to the state semifinals. Gwynn Park has captured ten state championships.
On the girls’ side, Liberty clinched its first state semifinal berth since 1983 with Friday’s 59-50 victory over county rival North Carroll.
The Lions, now 19-6 on the season, will face Gwynn Park (18-2) in the Class 2A state semifinals on Friday (3 p.m.) at UMBC’s RAC Arena. The Lady Yellow Jackets, who have won four state titles, defeated Calvert for the Class 2A South crown.
Liberty lost in its only previous state semifinal appearance 27 years ago.
