Carroll Sports Hall of Fame seeking nominations

The Westminster Rotary Club is seeking nominations for induction into the 2010 Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame. Applications are due by Jan. 23.

Potential candidates must be 21 years of age; must have been a resident of Carroll for five years prior to athletic accomplishment or engaged in their field of participation for a minimum of 20 years; and must have been retired from his/her area of accomplishment for a minimum of five years.

One exemption per year is allowed for a candidate that has met all qualifications above, but is still active in a lifetime sport.

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee and voted upon for induction at the Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, which will be held April 9 at the Carroll Community College, the location of the Sports Hall of Fame.

Applications may be obtained at the Boston Inn on Route 140, or by calling 410-848-9095 or 410-848-3326.

WAX registration for spring now available online

Registration for Westminster Area Lacrosse's spring season is registering players online. Boys and girls may register in the following age groups: Pockets, ages 5-6); Tykers, ages 7-8; Lightning, ages 9-10; Midgets, ages 11-12; and Juniors, ages 13-14. For details, go to www.waxlax.org.

Registration for Freedom girls softball in January

Walk-in signups for the Freedom District Optimist Girls Softball League will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at Freedom Community Center, Route 32 at the Pizza Hut, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The FDO Girls Softball League features programs for slow pitch for pre-kindergarten (5 years old by Sept. 1); grades one and two; grades three and four; grades five through seven; and grades eight through 12 that includes girls age 18 and still attending high school. Shooting from the line at free throw competition

The Knights of Columbus will host a basketball free throw championship Sunday at Northwest Middle School Gym, 99 Kings Drive, Taneytown.

Registration is 2 to 3 p.m., with the competition starting at 3 p.m. All entrants must be present and registered no later than 3:30 p.m. to compete. Open to boys and girls ages 10 to 14. No registration fee required, but all participants are required to provide a copy of their birth certificate as proof of age and written parental consent.

The event is co-sponsored with Taneytown Area Youth Basketball.
