In 2008, Josh Bordner was a key player on a Century High School squad that became the first county football team to achieve an undefeated regular season in 30 years.

The county champion Knights went on to win the Class 2A West Region title before losing in the state semifinals to two-time state champion River Hill.

In 2009, with a roster depleted by graduation losses, it seemed Century might slip from its status as the county's best team.

But that didn't happen, as the Knights rolled to a 7-4 record, another county championship and a second straight playoff appearance -- largely because of Bordner's leadership and productivity on both sides of the ball.

The 6-foot-4 senior excelled at quarterback, passing for a county-best 2,082 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for 10 touchdowns while gaining more than 300 yards on the ground.

Bordner was also the driving force for a Century defense that allowed just 97 points and posted four shutouts.

Also a standout basketball and baseball player for the Knights, Bordner will continue his football career at Boston College.

He carries a 3.89 weighted grade-point average, and will graduate from Century in January and attend Boston College during the spring semester.

A member of the National Honor Society and the Century Varsity Club, Bordner has also helped young people learn to play sports in his position as a counselor at the Knights' summer football and basketball camps for the past three years.

About This Award

Since fall 2007, The Eagle has presented this award to a Carroll County student-athlete at the conclusion of the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. The publication also presents an overall Student-Athlete of the Year award at the end of the school year.

All student-athletes who compete at the varsity level for a Carroll County public school are eligible for the award, which is based on academic achievement, athletic achievement and a record of service and citizenship in the school and community.
