With less than three weeks left in the high school sports season, several county teams have clinched championships and others are closing in.

Lacrosse

The South Carroll Cavaliers have already wrapped up the boys’ lacrosse title.The Cavaliers have won all five of their county starts and take a 12-1 overall record into the final week of the regular season. South Carroll’s only loss came against Marriotts Ridge of Howard County, a team the Cavaliers could face again in the upcoming Class 2A-1A South Region playoffs.  The Cavaliers edged Century, which finished with a 5-1 county record, for the title based on their 14-11 victory over the Knights in mid-April.  

The county girls’ lacrosse champion will be decided on Tuesday, when undefeated Liberty hosts once-beaten Westminster. The Lions, who improved to 5-0 in the county and 11-0 overall by holding off previously unbeaten Century last Thursday, will win the title outright if they beat the Owls.  A Westminster victory would create a three-way tie for the championship between the Owls, Liberty and Century.
 
The lacrosse regional tournaments begin on Thursday, with the finals scheduled for May 13.  The regional champions advance to the state tournament, to be played May 15-16 prior to the state title games at UMBC Stadium on May 19-20.

Baseball 

The North Carroll Panthers are sitting on top of the county baseball and softball standings. The Panthers share the baseball lead with Westminster, and the county champion will be decided on Wednesday when the two 5-0 clubs meet in Westminster.   North Carroll and Westminster are expected to do well in the regional tournament, which begins on Friday and concludes on May 15. The state tournament semifinals are scheduled for May 19, with the winners advancing to Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen for the title games on May 22-23.  

The same two schools are the frontrunners in the softball race. North Carroll is undefeated in county play at 5-0, with Westminster holding second at 4-1. The county champion will be crowned Wednesday when the Panthers visit the Owls.

All county teams will begin regional competition on Friday, with the region title games set for May 15.  The state semifinals are scheduled for May 19 at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie, with the state title games being played at the University of Maryland’s softball complex on May 23.

Tennis
 
The Carroll County tennis tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, North Carroll will host the boys’ tournament and Winters Mill will be the site for the girls’ competition.  Both tournaments conclude on Saturday at Winters Mill.

Liberty is the clear favorite to win both the boys’ and girls’ titles.  Both Lion teams have rolled to perfect 12-0 records entering the final week of the regular season, and must beat Century twice to clinch undefeated campaigns. 

The regional tennis tournaments will wrap up by May 16, and the state tournament is scheduled for May 22-23 at the University of Maryland in College Park.

Track and Field 

Finally, the county track and field championships are scheduled for Wednesday at Winters Mill High School.   From May 13-16, all seven Carroll high schools will take part in the track and field regional championships. 

State champions will be crowned from May 21-23 at Morgan State University’s Hughes Stadium in Baltimore.  The Class 1A and 2A meets that include Century, Francis Scott Key, Liberty, South Carroll, and Winters Mill will be held on May 21 and 23, with North Carroll and Westminster competing for the Class 4A crown on May 22-23.
