Westminster Area Lacrosse kicks off season

Westminster -- The Westminster Area Lacrosse season officially kicked off its 2009 season with a series of games.
The WAX Girls’ Midget A team came back from a 6-2 deficit against Freedom at half to win 10-8. Three goals were scored by Olivia Nave, two goals each by Lindsay Chiavacci and Emily Wilcox. One goal each was scored by Peyton Murray, Krissy Murphy and Kayleigh Phillips,, and Chiavacci, Murphy and Connor Zophy each had one assist. Phillips and Nave also controlled the draws, with three each. Defense also played a key role in the win thanks to the standout performance of Emily Zanti and goalies Mackenzie Chamberlain and Hailey Poisal.
The WAX Tykers teams do not track scores, but the action in the games shows the level of lacrosse skill and teamwork being built throughout the league. The WAX Girls’ Tyker 3 team had a strong showing against Freedom’s Tyker 1 team. Leading the ground ball charge for WAX included Addyson Polk, Cassie Alleman, and Gabby Clancy. WAX also dominated on draws with Erin Anderson, Anna Ruby and Kasey Schuchardt all helping their team. On defense, the team was led by goalies Teddi Simons and Kelsey Poisal.
In boys’ action, the Midget C1 team won their opening game against Kelly Post #2 by a score of 4-3. George Turner scored 2 goals, with Brady Phillips and Tristan Robb scoring one each. WAX midfielders out-hustled their opponents, winning the majority of the ground ball battles. The long pole defense was led by Nick Bullis, Brady Lowe, and Kevin McKinnon. Andrew Simms saved seven shots, including two saves in the last two minutes of play.
The Midget C2 team was also victorious in its game against Hereford with a score of 7-5. The team’s strong defensive play was led by goalie Connor Glass with 6 saves. Austin Haber scored 4 goals, and Logan Keller, Riley Hogan and Brice Schaefer each scored one goal and Noah Syens had 3 assists. The game was won by the team working together on the field, with many ground ball wins and solid teamwork.
