The Liberty High School volleyball team won its third Class 2A state championship in the past six years on Friday, but it was a new experience under first-year head coach Lauren Eberhardt.
The lady Lions sweept Rising Sun, the two-time state defending champions, at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum in the Nov. 14 matchup.
Liberty rolled to a three-game victory, beating Rising Sun 25-17, 25-21, and 25-19.
Under the direction of Eberhardt, the Lions finished with an overall record of 17-2.
The Lions came through the playoffs in dominating fashion. After defeating county rival Francis Scott Key to win the Class 2A West Region, Liberty beat Eastern Technical in the state semifinals -- also in three sets -- to clinch its fifth trip to the finals in the past eight years.
The Lions previously won state championships in 2003 and 2004.
Liberty also beat Rising Sun for the title four years ago.
