The Playoffs Begin

Class 2A West Region first round Liberty at Century (Friday, 7 p.m.)

It's the same teams at the same place for these two local rivals on Friday night. Century completed the first undefeated regular-season by a county team in 30 years last Friday with a 34-17 victory over Liberty. Coach Tony Shermeyer's Knights are playoff newcomers. The Knights are the top seed in a Class 2A West Region that includes Clarksburg, Middletown and Liberty. The Knights' offense will highlight fullback Cory Anderlik and senior receiver Luke Wright. Junior Josh Bordner is a steady quarterback who doubles as one of the county's leading tacklers for the Century defensive unit.

Liberty is also one of the county's hottest teams. The Lions rolled to a 7-3 record that included six straight wins. Coach Jeff Kent's Lions are making their second consecutive playoff appearance. Senior fullback Ethan Dorsey, who led the county with 1,095 rushing yards, will be counted on to keep the ball away from Century's offense. Junior quarterback Geoff Suddath has been the county's most improved quarterback this season.

Class 4A North Region first round Westminster at Linganore (Friday, 7 p.m.)

The Owls ended a four-game losing streak with a 45-31 defeat of North Carroll on Friday, and earned the fourth seed in the Class 4A North Region playoffs. The Owls finished the regular season with a 6-4 record and are making their second playoff appearance in four years. Top-seeded Linganore cruised to a 10-0 mark during the regular season and is considered the favorite to win the Class 4A state title. The Lancers routed Westminster, 58-7, in the season's sixth game. Coach Brad Wilson's Owls have relied on a passing attack all season, yet got its first 100-yard rushing game from senior Brett Baer against North Carroll. Baer's running will complement junior quarterback Andy Gilford and talented receivers Scott Cremens, Jerry Hart and Ricky Pownall.
