Maura Linde of Century and South Carroll's Jake Zamostny led the field in their classifications at Saturday's MPSSAA cross country championships.

Linde, a sophomore, covered the Hereford High School course in 19:48 to easily win the Class 2A girls' individual championship.

The Knights narrowly missed the state team title, as River Hill edged Century by one point.

Century placed three runners in the top six. In addition to Linde's heroics, junior Kirsten McGovern placed fourth and sophomore Allie Dearie finished sixth.

Zamostny, a senior at South Carroll, won the Class 1A boys' individual state championship with a time of 16:58. Zamostny's performance helped South Carroll to a second-place finish in the team competition, one point behind Bohemia Manor of Cecil County.

The South Carroll girls' team, which won the state Class 1A title last fall, also placed second behind Bohemia Manor. Rachel Sykes finished seventh and Catherine Robinson was eighth in the individual competition.
