It doesn't take a fortune teller to predict that this year's holiday season will be tough for some folks. The economy is certainly making things tight for many, and some have lost jobs to compound the situation.

But as they do every year, many people in Carroll County are working to make sure the holidays are not a season of worry and woe.

In particular, the Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc. is coordinating its annual countywide holiday help program, Neighbors In Need.

According to Holly Hutchins, deputy director, the program in 2007 helped more than 3,000 Carroll residents have a better holiday.

There are several ways residents can pitch in for this year's campaign. Residents can "adopt" a family or individual for the holiday season; or donate items directly to the Holiday Shop that's conducted in Westminster (simple gifts for all age groups are needed). Human Services Programs will even make house calls to pick up donated items.

Residents can also donate money. According to Hutchins, all contributions received are used solely to purchase gifts and for operating expenses related to Neighbors in Need and the Holiday Shop.

And finally, people can volunteer by organizing a fundraiser, gift drive or shopping party within their family, community or group.

Residents can also volunteer their time in the Holiday Shop, directly serving those in need.

Those who want to pitch in are invited to call 410-857-2999 to discuss volunteer efforts, adoptions or donations.

Monetary donations may be mailed to: Human Services Programs Inc., P.O. Box 489, Attn: Neighbors In Need, Westminster, MD 21158.

In the coming weeks we'll try to remind residents of other ways they can help neighbors as well.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are times when we all count our blessings and give thanks for what we have. One of the things we share is the good fortune to live in a community that cares for all its residents, regardless of need.
