George Edward Pittinger, 90, of Sykesville, died Jan, 27, 2010, at Fairhaven Retirement Community.
Born Dec. 27, 1919, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late George Daniel and Mae McNeil Pittinger. He was the husband of Ernestine Burnett ‘Sis’ Pittinger of Sykesville. They had been married for more than 69 years.
He had retired after 20 years of service from the Baltimore County Police Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
He was a 50-year member of the Freedom Masonic Lodge AF&AM 112 in Sykesville.
He was a member of St. Stephen’s Reformed Episcopal Church. He enjoyed ushering at church, working in his yard, watching Orioles baseball games and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife he is survived by daughters and sons-in law Peggy Wheatley and Don, Georgia Long and Rick and Nancy Pittinger all of Sykesville and son Ernie Pittinger and wife Ruthann of Winfield.
He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings Arthur E. Pittinger and Gladys Dorn.
The family received friends at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg. Funeral services were at the St. Stephen’s Reformed Episcopal Church, 2275 Liberty Road, Sykesville with his pastor, the Rev. Eric Jorgensen, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.
In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed in the form of contributions to the St. Stephen’s Reformed Episcopal Church.
