Ruth-Ellen Ross, 86, of Columbia, died Oct. 30, 2008, at Morningside Assisted Living, Ellicott City.
Born July 28, 1922 in Albany, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Robert Phillips and Edith Crounse Kolb.
She was a graduate of Cornell University and had attended Duke University. She retired in 1995 after working many years for the U.S. Department of Labor. She served as a staff member on the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped.
She also served on the Committee for Employment of the Handicap under Maryland Gov. Tawes.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Ellicott City.
She enjoyed the arts and loved the Opera. She cherished trips to the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She enjoyed painting and traveling.
She had been active at the Florence Bain Senior Center, Columbia.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sue Ellen and Thomas George May of Eagle River, Alaska; and grandchildren Neal C. Swearer of Auburn, Ala., Thomas R. May of Denver, Colo. and Steven E. May of Moscow, Idaho.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at 9 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Ellicott City. Interment will be in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
The family will receive friends at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville on Friday, Nov. 7, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
