Velda Arlene McCusker, 72, of Westminster

Velda Arlene McCusker, 72, of Westminster died Oct. 9, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster.

Born July 20, 1936, in Paw Paw, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lester Divel and Hilda Peck Divel.

Her husband, William L. "Bill" McCusker, died Oct. 28, 2001.

She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks Lodge No. 2277 in Westminster, where she was employed as a hostess and server and also known as "Miss Elk."

She enjoyed her family, friends and her dogs.

She is survived by daughter Lori D. Gromley of New Oxford, Pa., brother and sister-in-law Donald and Cheryl Divel of Hancock; brother William Divel of Las Vegas, Nev.; and sister and brother-in-law Maxine and Daniel Fleming of Clear Spring.

She was preceded in death by sister Shirley Keller.

Funeral services were held Oct. 13 at Fletcher Funeral Home, PA, Westminster, with the Rev. Dr. Frederick P. Eckhardt officiating. Interment was in St. John Cemetery.

Frances Connolly Bond, 78, of Lutherville

Frances Connolly Bond, 78, of Lutherville, died Oct. 10, 2008, at Gilchrist Center, Towson.

She was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Ellwood Connolly and Anna Catherine O'Connell Connolly.

She was the spouse of the late Roy Ellsworth Bond.

She was a bank teller for more than 20 years. She was an active member of Arlington Baptist Church with the Pioneer Girls, and also taught Sunday school. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking.

Surviving her are children and their spouses: Michael R. and Catherine Bond of Ellicott City and Steven G. and Beth Bond of Finksburg; brother Gilbert Connolly; and grandchildren Danette and Kevin Hoffman, Luke and Amanda Bond, Sarah and Jeremy Fried, Micah Bond, Douglas and Sarah Logan and Caroline and Sam Ardenec.

Funeral services will be conducted Oct. 15, 11 a.m. at Arlington Baptist Church, 3030 N. Rolling Road, Baltimore, with interment in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Nathan Bales, 89, of Hanover, Pa.

Nathan Bales, 89, of Hanover, Pa., formerly of Baltimore, passed peacefully on Oct. 10, 2008, at home, surrounded by his family.

He was the husband of 48 years to Annabelle (Thompson) Bales.

He was born Dec. 10, 1918, in London, Ky., the son of the late Joseph Emsley Bales and Roxie (Disney) Bales and the stepson of Rosa (Bryant) Bales.

Mr. Bales proudly served his country during World War II as a truck driver in the 75th Quartermaster Company in Germany, France and Brussels, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge from the army, he made his home in Baltimore and worked most of his life as a carpenter.

In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and crafts. He was proud of his workshop, where he spent most of his free time during his retirement building furniture, planters and wishing wells. He was a proud life member of the VFW.

In addition to his wife Annabelle, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law Dana Leah and Victor Roe of Hanover; and son and daughter-in-law Jeffery Scott and Barbara Jean Bales of Hanover.

He is also survived by grandchildren Ethan Scott Bales, Kyle Lee Bales, Olivia Erin Bales and Garrett Joseph Bales, Daniel Gregory Roe and Victoria Elizabeth Roe, all of Hanover; and nephews Eddie Adams and his wife Lois and Nathan Dean Adams of London, Ky.

He was preceded in death by sister Hazel Adams and grandson Nathan Victor Roe.

Arrangements were by Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, PA, Winfield, where services were held Oct. 13 with pallbearers Jeffrey Bales, Ethan Bales, Kyle Bales, Victor Roe, Robert Bender and Ralph Gemmill. Interment was in Taylorsville United Methodist Church cemetery, Taylorsville.

Arthur N. Disney Jr., 82, of Owings Mills

Arthur N. Disney Jr., 82, of Owings Mills, died Oct. 8, 2008, at the Northwest Hospital Center.

Born Sept. 1, 1926, in Hamden, he was the son of the late Arthur N. and Cora Lego Disney Sr.

He was the husband of Jean Marie Disney, who died in 1996. They had been married 45 years.

He graduated from Western Maryland College (1951) and earned his master's from the University of Maryland (1958).

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a probation officer and director of probation for the Circuit Court of Baltimore County.

He was a member of Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF&AM of Westminster, the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Boumi Temple) and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, in which he played trumpet in their bands.

He is survived by sons Arthur N. III, Randy and Jeff Disney, and daughter Melissa Disney. He is also survived by sister Cora Williamson and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, Eldersburg, with the Rev. Jeffrey Paulsen officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Memorial Park in Sykesville.
