Petition won't work ... unless residents join in
Posted 9/15/08
The column by John Culleton in the Sept. 3 issue of The Eldersburg Eagle ("Report from the front, or at least the construction zone"), noted the Freedom Area Citizen's Council's petition to Sears Holding Corp., owners of KMart.
Culleton doubts that it will work. Fair enough.
FACC has been in communications with Sears Holding Group over the past several months. These communications may have brought the group a little closer together, but there is no resolution to the revitalization of Carrolltown Center.
The petition is the next step and he is absolutely correct, it will not work if we do not get the support of South Carroll citizens.
Most of our council members work and have families. On our own, if we are able to obtain 200-300 signatures, this will not be a large enough number to impress Sears based on the population of the area.
Only if there is an outpouring of support to sign the petition will they take notice.
I, along with the other council members, urge you to come to the South Carroll Senior Center on Thursday Sept. 18, 7:30 to 9 p.m. and sign the petition. If you are unable to make this date, we will announce another sign-up time later.
If you like the center as it is now and feel that is representative of the standard of our community, we agree with your decision not to attend.
If you believe that it is blight and desperately needs renovation, we hope you will show your support.
FACC will be in contact with Sears and Black Oak Associates to keep them up to date on this endeavor.
Hopefully, they will listen to the community they depend on to support them.
Ellen Dix, president
Freedom Area Citizens' Council
