Drunken driving opinions

A Washington Regional Alcohol Program-sponsored July 2008 poll of residents of Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C., asked what adults over 18 years old thought about drunken driving and enforcement. The poll had a margin of error of +\- 3.5 percent.

* 62 percent think drunken driving is riskier than unprotected sex during a one-night stand.

* 86 percent think drunken driving is riskier than sky diving.

* 77 percent strongly support the use of sobriety checkpoints.

* 73 percent of people think drunken driving is the most dangerous threat on Maryland roads (first being drivers using cell phones).

* 71 percent think people drive drunk because they're not aware how impaired they are.

Drunken driving facts

* In 2007, police made 24,909 DUI arrests in Maryland, averaging 68 arrests per day.

* More people are arrested in Maryland for drunk driving annually than can fill the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, which holds 14,000.
