A Manchester resident who commanded the Baltimore County Police Tactical Unit died of a stroke Aug. 11, shortly after responding to a murder-suicide in Randallstown.

Lt. Michael Howe, 55, a 30-year police department veteran, collapsed after returning to his Carroll County home after the incident.

He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital and died the following afternoon. Because of the relationship to the call, his death was deemed in the line of duty.

Howe led the tactical unit since 1998, and was recalled by colleagues in the department as an exemplary leader and compassionate friend.

He was born March 9, 1953, in Baltimore, the son of the late Lyman H. and Irene Mavromihalis Howe.

He is survived by beloved wife Debra L. Howe; stepson Jason Simons and his wife Melissa; brother Chris Howe and his wife Cindy; grandson Jackson W. Simons; and godchild Kyle L. Hann.

He is also survived by mother- and father-in-law James and Nancy Seal, brother- and sister-in-law Don and Salli Goodrich and nieces and nephew Ryan Howe, Erin Haines and Rory Howe.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Manchester (too late to be included in this edition). Howe was interred at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bartholomew Church, 2930 Hanover Pike, P.O. Box 448, Manchester, MD 21102.
