Three Carroll County public high schools have been named to Newsweek magazine’s list of “America’s Best High Schools.”

Century High School in Eldersburg, at No. 1019, was the highest ranked county school on the list, which included 98 schools from Maryland.

Liberty High was the next highest scoring school in the county, at No. 1121.

And Winters Mill High School in Westminster rounded out the big three in Carroll County at No. 1560.

Dr. Charles Ecker, superintendent of Carroll County Public Schools, said of the results, “We are proud and pleased that three of our seven high schools made the top 6 percent of schools in the country.

“I want to thank the staff, students, and parents for making this possible,” he added.

The annual list, compiled in collaboration with The Washington Post, represents the top 6 percent of high schools in the nation, based on total student participation in highly rigorous coursework and exams.

Newsweek’s honor roll is based on an index which divides the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2009 by the number of the school’s graduating seniors.

Maryland had 98 of its 185 public high schools on the list, with seven from Montgomery County in the top 100.

Only California (285 schools), New York (162 schools), Florida (135 schools) and Texas (127 schools) — had more schools on the list than Maryland, and no state had a greater percentage of its schools than Maryland (53 percent).
