HAMPSTEAD -- Carroll County Bureau of Utilities chief Joe Barrington says don't mind the colored smoke coming out of roof vents and manhole covers in Hampstead during June.

It's normal. At least it's normal starting Monday, June 7, when engineers will perform a smoke test study on sewer lines through town. The tests will wrap up Wednesday, June 30.

The tests will test for leaks and any other damage in the sewer lines, Barrington said. Smoke will not enter homes or buildings that are properly plumbed and vented, and if water traps are working.

During the testing, colored smoke may be seen coming out of roof vents, building foundations and manhole covers, Barrington said. The smoke is harmless to humans, pets, food and other materials, according to a release from the bureau.

Homeowners will receive a notice on their doors at least 48 hours prior to the testing, which will be conducted on weekdays. Residents do not have to be home during the tests.

The study will examine if there are any water leakage issues, as well as how much water is in the system when it is not in use, he said. The county will use the study to examine what repairs will be needed on the system. If smoke does enter your home or building, residents should call the bureau at 410-386-2164.
