(Enlarge) Maryland State POlice issued this photo of Anthony T. Soligny, who was apprehended in Georgia and is charged in a warrant for assault in Carroll County.

Maryland State Police said Wednesday that a Carroll County man they say allegedly assaulted his wife Tuesday night with a hammer, was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. today by deputies in Georgia.

State Police Lt. Andrew Winner identified the man as Anthony T. Soligny, 33, of the unit-block of Grapes View Drive, New Windsor.

State Police obtained a warrant for him after last night’s incident, charging him with attempted murder, first and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Police had issued a description of Soligny and his vehicle, and according to police , just before 3 p.m. today, a deputy from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia spotted Soligny in his truck, heading south on Interstate 85.

“While the deputy was following Soligny, (he) pulled to the side of the road, called 911 and told dispatchers he was going to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident,” according to the police report.

In a telephone interview with The Eagle, Winner said the incident “appears to be yet another domestic violence case. It’s a terrible case.”

The victim is currently undergoing care for her injuries at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she is listed in stable condition.

According to a preliminary investigation by state police, she is alleged to have been assaulted by her husband with a steel and rubber hammer, which police said they have taken into evidence.

At about 11:30 p.m. yesterday, State Police at the Westminster Barracks received a 911 call from the victim, who had gone to a neighbor’s home to call police. Police reported that the  troopers found the victim had sustained what appeared to be severe blunt force trauma injuries to her head.  She was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center, then later to Shock Trauma Center.

Soligny was not at his home when troopers arrived and a lookout was issued for him, according to the release. Now, “Soligny will be held as a fugitive,” according to a release, “while Maryland State Police investigators initiate extradition proceedings to return him to Maryland."

Troopers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault. Check back at www.explorecarroll.com for any update.
