A 23-month-old Middleburg boy was seriously injured this morning after his clothes caught fire when he apparently opened the door to a wood stove.

Dominic Ryan Latch, of the 6000-block of Middleburg Road,  was transported, by ambulance, to Carroll Hospital Center for 3rd degree burns to his chest, stomach and arms, according to a press release by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. He was then flown to Johns Hopkins Bay View Burn Center by State Police Helicopter.

Fire marshal investigators determined that around 11:18 a.m., the boy opened the door to the wood stove, and his clothes caught on fire from the contents of the stove.

Dominic’s father, Joseph Latch who was outside shoveling snow, heard his son screaming and saw the boy in flames thru the glass door, according to the release. He rushed into the house where he reportedly rolled Dominic on a couch to extinguish the flames. He then laid Dominic on another couch in order to douse flames, which spread to the original couch from the little boy’s burning clothing.

Fire and Rescue personnel from Union Bridge, New Midway and Taneytown fire companies responded to the incident.
