I enjoy community service because, to me, it is a chance for people to give back to their community and touch the lives of people living around you. At my age I am at the beginning of many hours, days, and years of community service. Some community service I have done around this time of year has been to go to the senior care and elderly care center and sing carols with and to the elderly that are there.

I take pleasure in getting a chance to connect to my community. I really enjoy being able to talk to the elderly there and I think they also get pleasure from getting our visits. Though one thing that always makes me sad is seeing the patients with dementia and knowing that they will probably not remember everything very well. I wish I was able to volunteer more at the senior center and in the future I expect to be out there helping more. I think some of the seniors there just like to know that people car and that young people are still helping out in the community. Another thing that I think makes the elderly and seniors at the elderly and senior care center happy is seeing kids take time off from all the video games, television, internet, and other stuff that is going on or they are doing in their lives to come and talk with them.

Something I have always hoped would happen, and one day when I get more involved might, is that after working with a dementia patient one day you come in to do community service and they actually recognize you. To me that would be a very honoring and happy experience. Not just for me but for the dementia patient as well. That is one thing I like about community service that just getting a thank you from someone or knowing that you are making a difference no matter how small in that person's life is very gratifying and can brighten your day and the day of someone else's around you.

A community is something everyone lives in

It's filled with people, some called kin

You get to choose if you want to participate

It gives you a feeling you don't anticipate

There are many ways you can help your community

It creates a land of opportunity

Not just for you but for your society

For community service there is a variety

You could pick up trash or plant trees

Help a random person without a please

You could help at a hospital for elderly care

Or help people in despair

There are many forms of community service

Even though it might make you nervous

It's important to get out and help your community
