In anticipation of this weekend's snow storm, schools and organizations are already planning closures, cancellations and early dismissals.

The National Weather Service this morning upgraded this weekend's snow event to "near blizzard conditions." About 16 to 24 inches of snow is expected to fall between mid-morning Friday and Saturday. The worst conditions are expected to be after sunset Friday into Saturday morning where visibility is expected to be less than one-quarter of a mile.

Carroll County's snow emergency plan went into effect at 11:10 a.m. today.

Carroll County Public Schools announced Thursday that middle and high schools will dismiss two hours and 45 minutes early because of the potential inclement weather. Elementary schools were already scheduled to have an early dismissal for professional time for teachers.

"Although it is difficult to make these decisions based on a forecast, the school system feels it is important to err on the side of caution to protect the safety of our students," the release states.

Piney Run Park and Nature Center's Sledfest scheduled for Saturday could also be canceled due to too much snow, according to a tweet by Vivian Laxton, Carroll County's public information administrator.

"We want you to be safe getting to Piney Run," she tweeted.

Call the park after 7 a.m. Saturday at 410-795-3274 to verify the event will still happen.
