A 9-year-old boy seriously injured on Dec. 29 when a tree fell on him at the Hashawha Environmental Center in Westminster has died.
Vivian Laxton, public information administrator for Carroll County, told The Eagle that the boy, who she identified as Noah Asid, died Thursday morning at Johns Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore.
Laxton did not offer additional information about the family, adding that the parents had requested privacy for the time being.
The boy was one of two children injured when a 60-foot hickory fell as youngsters and counselors were preparing for a hike as part of the holiday-week nature camp at Hashawha. located off Littlestown Pike.
The hickory reportedly fell against a large maple tree. Then the maple’s branches gave way, bringing the hickory and several large branches to the ground, and striking the children, Laxton said.
A 10-year-old girl was treated and released at Carroll Hospital Center.
The boy sustained “very serious” injuries, Laxton said, and was flown to Johns Hopkins Children Center.
More than 60 children in fourth and fifth grades had been attending the three-day camp when the incident occurred. The camp, which began Monday, was dismissed on Tuesday after the incident.
On Thursday, Laxton said an investigation into the incident by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was still under way.
