ELDERSBURG — Police are advising patrons who used a Bank of America ATM in Eldersburg to check their bank statements after a skimming device that collected account data was discovered on the machine.
Employees at Bank of America, 6400 Ridge Road, Eldersburg, told State Police that about 100 debit cards were compromised because of the device, police said.
Police said that the automated teller machine skimmer was placed on the machine on several dates ranging from October through November. The bank reported the discovery on Nov. 18.
An ATM skimmer is a portable card reader that can be attached to the front of machines and capture personal identification numbers.
Customers should look at ATMs for unusual appearances or items placed on them, police said. ATM users should also look for scratches, marks and tape residue at the keypad, card entry slot and above the display screen as clues for tampering, police said.
Police said they believe the suspects have placed similar devices on ATMs throughout Maryland and Virginia.
Anyone with information may call Trooper First Class Corey Green at 410-386-3053.
