Thelma Crumpacker Wimmer, 100, the woman whose involvement in Sykesville activities and history prompted the creation of the annual Thelma Wimmer Day celebration, died Sunday, Oct. 11, at Fairhaven Retirement Community, Sykesville.

Born March 30, 1909, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward Vernon and Maggie Flora Crumpacker.

She was the wife of the late Wilbur S. Wimmer.

She grew up in Union Bridge, and was a 1926 graduate of Union Bridge High School.

In 1936, she moved to Sykesville, where she was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was choir director many years ago.

She was active in town business, and had served on the Sykesville Planning Commission and the Town Council, and served as town historian for many years.

The town to honored her every year since 2000 with Thelma Wimmer Day to recognize her contributions and draw attention to the rich history of the community.

She had spent the past several years at Fairhaven.

She is survived by son Lewis W. Wimmer of Westminster,  son and daughter-in-law Jon E. and Beverly Wimmer of Salem, Ore., and granddaughter and her spouse Susan E. Wimmer and Jason Newport of Wilmington, N.C.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg with her, the Rev. Pastor Roland “Bud” Brown officiating. Private interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery.
