Sykesville's annual Concerts in the Park series is back this year with an added night.

The town's concert series kicks off at 7 p.m., Friday, July 10 at Millard Cooper Park on Cooper Drive in Sykesville with No Stringz Attached, which is an acoustic set with members of Moe Stringz -- which will also perform that night.

"They're pretty much back by popular demand," said Ivy Wells, Sykesville's director of economic development.

The free concert series will run each Friday through Aug. 21 and will feature a variety of cover bands and original songs.

Because of how the calendar falls this year, Wells decided to add an extra night, which will wrap up with Baltimore-area pop-rock band Getting to Goodbye. The band frequently plays Towson venues and has also played at Sykesville's farmer's markets.

Wells said the band performs original songs as well as putting their own style on covers -- similar to what American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert did this past season.

Speaking of idols and stars, there's always a chance that Sykesville concert goers could see stars before they made it.

In 2007, eighty1south performed at the series. Just a year later, band member Caitlin Fisher starred on CMT's "Can You Duet?" and won. She and her duet partner, Will Snyder, now have a recording contract and are set to release an album this year.

Wells said she sees Getting to Goodbye as having that same star potential.

The concert series is also where careers can start. Two students from Sykesville Middle School, Tyler Atwell and Devon Nickoles, performed in Sykesville during an intermission in 2007 -- now they've grown to a full band and perform around the county as the group, Crossfire. The duo will perform at RedLine's intermission July 17, and also host a full back-to-school concert Aug. 14.

The concert series is like a free, tiny Merriweather Post Pavilion concert without the hassle, Wells said. People can stroll in from their homes, put down a blanket and chair and enjoy the music in the park.

"Each year more and more people come out, and it just strengthens the community," she said.

New for this year includes Chick-fil-A sandwiches for sale as well as Hoffman's ice cream. Also, Cooper Park has updated playground equipment along with a lighted playground.
