Patrons of the Finksburg library branch are finding that the parking lot is about as packed as the books on the shelves.

The library, which opened Jan. 28, is seeing more customers than anticipated and some have to park out in the streets, said Tom Rio, director of general services for the county at Thursday's County Commissioners' Roundtable discussion.

Beginning this week, workers will add 22 parking spaces to the library, and no additional funding is needed to build spaces for the $6.6 million library, he said.

"We had funds remaining in that project," he said.

The work is estimated at $33,000, and the spaces should be installed by Monday or Tuesday, he said.

The 14,316-square-foot building, located at 2265 Old Westminster Pike, features a number of environmentally-friendly "green" design features — including a geothermal energy system, a solar-powered hot water system and high ceilings and windows that are designed to maximize use of natural light.
