(Enlarge) FREEDOM: Our final location, for the word Freedom, comes from the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department building, at 6680 Sykesville Road (Route 32), Sykesville. Did you guess them all? If not, click to see the other images and reveal their locations as well. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Carroll County has more than its share of patriotic spirit — so much, in fact, that it spills out onto our highways, parks and public and private buildings.

Shown above in a slideshow are six words or names that carry a sense of civic pride, patriotism and history. Four are simple words that carry special meaning this week as we approach the Fourth of July — Union, Liberty, Freedom and American.

The other two are names that have connections to Carroll County history:

• Francis Scott Key, author of our National Anthem, who was raised in Carroll County; and

• Charles Carroll, the county’s namesake and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

So where are these signs of patriotism?

You tell us. For the Fourth of July, the Carroll Eagle is challenging readers to identify where each of these particular signs are located in the county.

The first person to e-mail us with all six locations — to jjoyner@patuxent.com — will win a brand new, 3-foot by 5-foot American flag.

Please be sure to include your name and a contact phone number in your e-mail.
The deadline is noon, Tuesday, July 7.

Sound tough? OK, we’ll help.

Beginning Sunday, June 28, we’ll reveal one location each day this week on our Web site — www.explorecarroll.com.

That means that before the Fourth of July, all six will be revealed. Can you keep track, and perhaps even figure it all out sooner?

We think so. After all, we have faith in Carroll County’s patriotic spirit.

Good luck, and happy Fourth of July.
