Westminster Mayor Kevin Utz gave a hearty "thumbs up" as he joined students, parents and local officials June 12 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly-renovated Westminster Skate Park. A large crowd turned out at the park, located on the corner of Tuc Road and Locust Avenue, Westminster, to see — and test — the new collection of new half-pipes, ramps and other features.

The ribbon cutting was the culmination of a $130,000 project that started in October 2007 when city officials began meeting with parents and teens to talk about a possible upgrade of the popular park. But it was the work of students from the Carroll County Career and Technology Center — who helped design and actually build the pieces for the park — that brought it to reality.

At the ceremony, officials noted that the dedication ended a $130,000 renovation involving city, county and state agencies with help from citizens and parents.

The park is now open for skaters and BMX bikers sun up to sun down, seven days a week.
