The Sykesville Police Department said this week that a 9-year-old Eldersburg girl died Monday, Jan. 26, from injuries as a result of a car crash at Springfield Avenue and Route 32 in Sykesville.

At 8:05 a.m. Monday, a Volkswagen Passat was traveling northbound on Route 32 and attempted to make a left turn onto Springfield Avenue, but a van traveling southbound on Route 32 collided into the Passat, according to Sykesville Police Chief John Williams Jr.

The Volkswagen driver, David McCauslin of Eldersburg and his 6-year-old daughter Charlotte McCauslin were taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Lydia McCauslin, 9, of Eldersburg was flown via Medevac helicopter to Hopkins and died from injuries as a result of the accident.

At Monday night’s meeting of the Mayor and Town Council, Chief Williams said that David McCauslin, the father of the girl, was a captain in the Army and just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq last week.

Three of six passengers in the work van suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Carroll Hospital Center, according to the Sykesville Police Department.

Town Manager Matt Candland said the town will send a letter to the State Highway Administration asking to require turns on Route 32 at that intersection to be made only on a solid arrow light.
