Mount Airy Hall of Fame nominations

The Historical Society of Mount Airy Inc. is soliciting nominations for its 2009 Hall of Fame program. Local organizations and individuals are invited to nominate a person or persons to be considered.

The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor deserving people, living or deceased, of Mount Airy and the immediate areas who, by work, service, volunteerism, word or deed, made the community a better place for everyone. Also honored will be those who were born here and went on to bring honor and glory to the community by their efforts, deeds, or life's work outside of the area.

Nomination forms may be found at the Mount Airy Town Hall, the Mount Airy Museum, and on the Web site, www.carr.org/mtairy (follow the links to the Historical Society, then Hall of Fame).

Candidates should be considered from business, community service, education, historical, humanitarian, political, religious, sports-recreational or a general category.

All nominations must be in the hands of the committee by Saturday, Dec. 6.

The induction will be held on March 17, 2009, at the American Legion Home, Prospect Road.

Holiday tree sets stage for tree lighting

A 20-foot White Spruce donated by Ronald Medvetz of Westminster has been chosen -- and erected -- as the official Carroll County holiday tree.

The tree was chosen by Brian Rhoten, a member of the county's Environmental Advisory Council, and Jim Slater, environmental compliance officer, from more than a dozen offers of donations from across the county.

On Thursday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m., the lights will be turned on during a ceremony in front of the County Office Building, 125 N. Center St., Westminster.

Entertainment will be provided by fifth-grade band members and the string ensemble from Westminster Elementary School under the direction of Brian Thompson, and by "The Voices" Community Ensemble, directed by Ronald K. Douglass Sr.

Cookies and hot chocolate are being donated by residents of the Westminster Ridge Retirement Community. The public is invited to attend.

The Board of County Commissioners has sponsored the community-wide holiday tree-lighting ceremony since 2004.

County promotes 'Freecycle' movement

Carroll County citizens can get rid of unwanted items -- and perhaps find something they want instead -- by joining a Freecycle group at www.freecycle.org.
