Carroll County’s Bureau of Utilities officials said that a faulty pump switch is to blame for 30,000 gallons of sewage spilling into an Eldersburg stream.
Crews discovered on Wednesday, Oct. 8, that sewage spilled from a manhole into a stream that leads to Little Morgan Run creek.
Crews attribute the spill due to a pump sequencing switch out of adjustment at the Edgewood Pump Station in Eldersburg. New parts are being ordered for the station, according to a press release from Carroll County Government.
Ed Singer, director of the county’s Environmental Health, said Carroll County Health Department workers are monitoring the stream and testing samples, but doesn’t foresee a large problem due to the size of the spillage and where it was.
“Nature will take care of itself once the levels of bacteria get back to normal,” he said in a telephone interview.
Crews applied lime to the area, which is fenced off and warning signs are posted to prevent people from walking in the contaminated water and banks, he added.
