Corbit's last stand
A Civil War encampment started Saturday and will continue Sunday through 4 p.m. as part of the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Westminster, aka Corbit's Charge. Events are centered around the multi-service center at 224 N. Center St., Westminster, and start Sunday with a 10 a.m. tent church service, followed by military drills, artillery demonstrations, children activities, speakers, displays and music at 1 p.m. by the Victorian Pallor Ensemble. There will be 45-minute walking tours throughout the day. Frederick Douglass scholar and actor Michael E. Crutcher will deliver an account of Douglass' life at 11:30 a.m. at the encampment site. Charles Corbit and the men of Companies C and D of the First Delaware Cavalry fought in Westminster and played a factor in delaying the arrival of Stuart to Gettysburg until July 2, 1863.
Liberty Street Roads The 20th annual Liberty Street Rods Car Show will be held Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department, 1320 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville. Manchester carnival Manchester Volunteer Fire Department will open its carnival Monday at the department's carnival grounds at 3397 York Street, Manchester. The carnival run through July 4, and opens at 5 p.m. each night. Rides, food, games and nightly entertainment. World of music Blues musician Christopher James will present, " Music Around the World," played on a variety of instruments including the guitar, mandolin, harmonica, ukulele and more, in a show Monday, 10 a.m., at the Finksburg Library, 2265 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg. Tuned to Taneytown Wii Play Music, an event for ages 8-17, will be held Tuesday, 1-3 p.m., at the Taneytown Library, 10 Grand Drive, Taneytown. Songs at Six The Downtown Westminster Main Street Program will host an evening music concert series on Locust Lane, Songs at Six, beginning this Thursday at 6 p.m. with the Robert Allen Blues Band. Sign me up Eldersburg Library, 6400 Hemlock Drive, Eldersburg, will host two programs on Friday about America Sign Language. At 9:45 a.m., Kathy MacMillan will lead a program for ages up to 24 months. Then at 10:45 a.m., she will lead another program for ages 2-4. Fabulous Fourth The Carroll County Farm Museum will host its Independence Day events on Saturday. Bands, food, crafters, wagon rides and more. Then, the annual fireworks show is held at 9:30 p.m., hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Carroll County. From noon to 5 p.m., admission is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 7-18 and 60 and older. Children 6 and younger are free with a paying adult. At 5 p.m., the cost is a $6 per car to help pay for the fireworks. Spiral into Sunday Westminster's Month of Sundays summer concert series will debut for 2009 on Sunday, 6:45 to 9:15 p.m. with the group, Spiral.
