Century High School JROTC places second in national competition

The Century High School JROTC Leadership Team this week participated in the championship round of the 2010 Army JROTC Leadership Symposium.

Century's team, composed of Alexander Carroll, Jesse Frangoulis, Milton Hirsch and William Robison, was one of only 48 squads from across the globe to advance to the finals -- and placed second overall in the competition.

The championship event, sponsored by the Army JROTC and conducted by the College Options Foundation, was held in Fairfax, Va., on the campus of George Mason University from June 25-29.

Century High's competed in two rounds of competitive online play against more than 1,900 teams to earn a place in the championship. In these rounds, students were tested on high school curriculum, including math, science, English and leadership skills.

Francis Scott Key High student's essay on family history wins award

Josephine "Josie" Grant, a rising sophomore at Francis Scott Key High School, was one of 10 students in the country to be recognized in the national Legacy Project's 11th annual "Listen to a Life" essay contest for 2009-2010.

Students interviewed a person over the age of 50, such as a grandparent, older friend or a nursing home resident. Students then wrote a 300-word essay based on the interview.

For the contest, Josie interviewed her grandmother, Lucille Frazita, 80, who conveyed the importance of family life, and told her, "Family is all you leave when you go."

Josie's winning essay is posted on the Legacy Project website at www.legacyproject.org.
