A student from West Middle School and a Carroll County Public Schools supervisor were recipients of the 2010 Environmental Awareness Awards presented by the Board of County Commissioners and the county's Environmental Advisory Council.

Kelly Smith, a sixth-grader at West Middle School received the student award for her efforts to increase recycling at the school.

West Middle is seeing a decrease in waste generated during lunch shifts due to Kelly's awareness and recycling efforts. In addition, the sixth grade has begun composting, and the soil created will be used in the school's rain garden.

Cindy Eckenrode, supervisor of Elementary Education, received an award for her work to create environmental curriculum and projects at each grade level and apply for grants.

Award winners received plaques and will have trees planted in their honor at Bear Branch Nature Center, in Westminster.
