This event will include the Hope Knight Carnival, geared toward children ages 3 and up, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the gym at the school, 355 Ronsdale Road, Sykesville.
Games and activities will be hosted by Century clubs and organizations. Admission is free, but tickets for the game booths will be 25 cents each. Games will include bean bag toss, a duck pond, limbo, ring toss, putt-putt golf, balloon darts. There will also be a magic show, cake walk and silent auction.

After the carnival, the sixth annual Century Idol will be held. The five finalists will make a "red carpet" walk at 6:40 p.m., with the show starting at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $8 at the door, or $7 with a canned food item to benefit Carroll County Food Sunday.

Kids Helping Kids -- Oklahoma Road Middle School was a top achiever in the Harvest for the Hungry "Kids Helping Kids" food collection campaign. The program, sponsored by the State Department of Education and the Maryland Food Bank, collected more than 700,000 pounds of food to help feed hungry children. The school will be recognized for its efforts during an awards ceremony n May 14.
Library month -- As part of National School Library Media Month in April, Winfield Elementary School's media center is doing "Kudos by Kids" with students. Students of all grade levels can nominate any book for a self-created award. Students in grades three through five nominate books in writing and share their nomination on the morning announcements. Younger students can draw a "seal" for their award and their nominated books are put on display in the media center.
Reading quilt -- Also for National School Library Media Month, students at Eldersburg Elementary School are creating a reading quilt. Each of six quilts centers around a book character or theme. Student illustrations will be transferred to quilt squares, which will be sewn by volunteers and hung in the media center. The school also will celebrate its Daily Independent Reading Time program. Since October, students and staff have been tallying the number of minutes they spend reading in an effort to reach one million minutes. If the goal is met, students will watch staff members kiss a critter (to be determined). A library trivia contest also will be held.
Spring flea market -- Century High School will sponsor a Spring Flea Market on Saturday, April 25, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the school parking lot. The cost to rent a spot is $20. Vendors may call 410-386-4400, Ext. 274, to reserve a space. Leave a message with your name, phone number and address. Class of 2011 student officers will be on hand to help set up and take down tables.
Oh lá lá -- French students from four Carroll County high schools -- Century, Westminster, Winters Mill and Francis Scott Key -- participated in the National French Contest (Grand Concours) held in March at McDaniel College. The following Century students placed in the top 10 in the state on their particular level test: Erin Chinery, No. 1; Nicole Alvarez, No. 2; Margaret Ridgway, No. 2; Ashley Schalick, No. 3; Nicole Pham, No. 3; Amanda Fossett, No. 4; Samantha Atwell, No. 5; Nick Monteil, No. 5; Krystal Crossland, No. 9. Their teacher is Charlene Rowe.
Century High JROTC -- Century High School's JROTC Leadership team will participate in The College Options Foundation's 2009 JROTC Leadership Symposium and Academic Bowl in Washington, D.C.
The competition will be held at George Mason University, June 26-30.
Century's JROTC team competed in two rounds of competitive online play against thousands of JROTC students from across the world to win its place in the championship and the trip to Washington.
The team is one of only 48 in the nation to advance to the finals.
During the preliminary rounds, students were tested on standard curriculum including math, science and English, as well as leadership skills.
The College Options Foundation is a nonprofit with a mission of enriching the academic development of high school students and assisting them in their preparation for higher education.
Carson Scholars -- Two local students have been selected as Carson Scholars. The following students will be recognized at the Carson Scholars fund annual awards banquet on Sunday, April 26, at Martin's West.
Nicholas Holocker, grade eight, Sykesville Middle School; and Allison Williams, grade seven, Oklahoma Road Middle School, each earned the designation.
Carson Scholars is a nonprofit founded in 1994 by Johns Hopkins pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy. The fund awards $1,000 scholarships to students in grades four through 11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving the communities.
Visual art honors -- Several local students were among those presented with awards for their work in the visual arts during Carroll County's annual Visual Arts Awards program, held March 27 at Westminster High School
In mixed media, Keeley Tober, a 10th grader at South Carroll High School, captured first place.
In drawing, senior Amanda McCracken of Liberty High School won second place.
Greg Harrison, a senior at South Carroll High, won second in the painting category. And Tom Vogel, a junior also from also from South Carroll, earned second place in sculpture.
The first place winners received checks for $50 and a medal. The visual arts program at their schools received $150. Second place winners received a medal of recognition. All awards were provided by the Kiwanis Community Group.
Lions and Lioness -- The Freedom District Lions Club will award a $2,000 college scholarship to a senior at both Liberty and Century high schools. Applications may be picked up at the guidance office at each school or at www. freedomdistrictlions.com.
In addition, the Freedom Lioness Club will award another $1,000 scholarship to a senior at both Liberty and Century high.
