Teacher of the year finalists announced

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce have announced eight finalists for its Carroll County Teacher of the Year award, which involves a $1,000 prize for the winner.
The chamber recognized on Wednesday, April 1, 165 teachers at the 21st annual Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher Awards ceremony at Winters Mill High School.
The following teachers who received the Outstanding Teacher award will compete for $1,000 from the Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation. The money will be used for an educational project or program of his or her choice. The winner will also be the representative for the Maryland Teacher of the Year.
The finalists are:
• David Bortz, U.S. history teacher at Sykesville Middle School;
• Scott D’Orazio, instrumental music teacher at East Middle School;
• Patrick Dotterweich, social studies teacher at Shiloh Middle School;
• Tim Durkin, science teacher at Liberty High School;
• Ellen Gulya, second-grade teacher at Charles Carroll Elementary School;
• Patricia Keenan, Spanish teacher at South Carroll High School;
• Lisa Macurak, social studies teacher at New Windsor Middle School; and
• Dick Thompson, reading language arts teacher at West Middle School.
The awards recognize teaching excellence in the Carroll County Public School System. Students, parents, teachers and school administrators nominated teachers for this award.
The winner will be announced on Thursday, April 30.
