Deer Park Lions is seeking Carroll residents to participate. The topics for the essay contest are as follows:
Elementary grades -- select an early American (pre-1850) male or female and describe what they did to preserve our heritage.
Middle school -- describe what the American flag means to you.
High school -- describe the most important event of the 20th century and its impact on the preservation of patriotism in the USA.
Topics for adult, non-Lions focus on an event of perceived patriotism in the 21st century; and the topic for Lion and Lioness members asks how they can best preserve our heritage and patriotism.
Essays must be between 300 and 500 words, typed or computer generated, double-spaced, and include the entrant's name, home address, phone number and school name or "home schooled" for school-age participants.
More details are available at www.deerparklionsclub.org or by calling 410-848-8254.
Those interested in participating should forward their essays to the Deer Park Lions Club, P.O. Box 596, Finksburg, MD 21048. The deadline is Dec. 31, 2008. A small cash prize will be awarded in the categories.
