WESTMINSTER -- The City of Westminster Police Department has announced that it has enrolled in "tip411," an Internet-based system that allows residents to text message anonymous tips to police, and lets the police respond back creating a two-way anonymous "chat."

The system is reserved for public safety purposes and is operated by Citizen-Observer, a St. Paul, Minn., company.

"This new capability will help our citizens play a more active role in keeping ... neighborhoods safe, engaging our younger citizens in the process," said Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding.

Anyone with a cell phone can send an anonymous tip to the Westminster Police by texting the word TIPWPD and the tip information to 847411 (tip411). Anonymous e-mail tips can also be submitted to the department's website at www.westgov.com/police. Click on the "Suspicious Activity" link and provide the requested information.

Police noted that "tip411" should not be used for reporting crimes in progress or other emergencies. Those events should be go directly to 911.
