Rides, music and food galore will return Monday, June 22 in Sykesville for the 77th annual Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department carnival, held at the carnival grounds at Freedom Avenue and Sykesville Road.

The carnival, which is the department's largest fundraiser of the year, will run through Saturday, June 27. The grounds are open 6 to 11 p.m., each day, with rides starting at 7 p.m.

Shaw and Sons Amusements will provide the carnival rides.

Carnival goers can pay $15 to ride all night Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and $18 on other nights. Individual tickets will also be available.

The Ladies' Auxiliary will prepare some grub for the carnival -- including pit beef, ham and turkey sandwiches, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, funnel cakes and nightly dinner specials. The Freedom District Lions Club will again operate the stand for french fries.

The smoke-free social hall will host bingo each night, and the $10,000 raffle will also return. First-place receives $7,000, second-place receives $2,000 and third-place walks away with $1,000. Tickets are available for $2 a chance or three for $5. The drawing will take place at the closing of the carnival on Saturday. You do not need to be present to win.

Bands ranging from party/rock music to oldies and country will perform nightly (see schedule).

Fireworks also return this year, scheduled to take place Friday evening at dark. The rain date is Saturday.
